On 23 December 1990, Slovenians voted a referendum to decide whether or not to break away from Yugoslavia. On 26 December 1990, the results of the referendum were made public and 88.5% of voters voted in favour of Independence
Slovenian Independence and Unity Day is celebrated annually on 26 December. Independence and Unity Day has been observed as a public holiday in Slovenia sine 2005.
